The year of playing Noosa
by Mark Pringle
In 1982 Beegees played Noosa 7 times. And beat them in all the games that mattered.
Beegees beat Noosa 4 times, drew with them twice and lost to them just once during a season-long battle for supremacy. The previous season Noosa had won the Premiership and Grand Final for the first time in their history under their captain-coach, Scotsman Alan Sinclair.
Beegees were coached by Bevan Chantler, a Caboolture school teacher and captained by Tommy Giles.
Over a 3 week period in late-August and early-September Beegees and Noosa played each other an incredible 5 times including replays of both the Major Semi-final and Grand Final.
In the last game of the season Beegees beat Noosa 1-0 to snatch the Premiership from Noosa’s grasp. After being as low as 4th place during the season, Beegees had won their last 12 fixtures to secure their 8th Premiership.
In the Major Semi-final Beegees and Noosa played out a 1-all draw in front of a crowd of 750, with David Payne scoring for Beegees. The replay the following Tuesday night drew a crowd of 1,000 with Beegees winning 2-1 thanks to a brilliant individual goal by David Payne and a match-winner by substitute David White.
The Grand Final at Glasshouse was a nail-biter in front of a crowd of 3,000. Beegees led twice thanks to goals by David Payne and a header by Phil Shaw, but in the final 30 seconds Noosa were awarded a penalty which they converted to snatch an unlikely 2-2 draw.
The Grand Final replay the following Tuesday night was between two injured teams. Beegees had 4 players in doubt; Tommy Giles (corked thigh), Warren Whisson (back), David Payne (back) and Gordon Wendt (groin), whilst Noosa had 2 players in doubt; Peter Cossins (corked thigh) and Keith Foss (arm). Beegees won the replay 2-1 after trailing 1-0 at half-time. Another brilliant individual goal by David Payne and a winner by Phil Shaw was enough for Beegees to secure their 8th Grand Final.
During the 1982 season Beegees First Division won:
- Clive Fenn Cup beating Woombye 1-0 in the final
- the Premiership for the 8th time
- the Grand Final for the 8th time
